Senior experts within the Toyota Production System often draw simple maps when on the shop floor. These maps show the current physical flow of a product family and the information flow for that product family as the wind through a complex facility making many products. Much more important, these simple maps - often drawn on scrap paper - show where steps can be eliminated, flows smoothed, and pull systems introduced in order to create a truly lean value stream for each product family. In 1998 John Shook and Mike Rother of the University of Michigan wrote down Toyota's mapping methodology for the first time in Learning to See. This simple tool makes it possible for you to see through the clutter of a complex plant. You'll soon be able to identify all of the processing steps along the path from raw materials to finished goods for each product and all of the information flows going back from the customer through the plant and upstream to suppliers. In plain language and with detailed drawings, this workbook explains everything you will need to create accurate current state and future state maps for each of your product families and then to turn the current state into the future state rapidly and sustainably.

Abstract : Freshwaters are being transformed by multiple environmental drivers, creating uncertainty about future conditions. One way of coping with uncertainty is to manage for resilience to unanticipated events while facilitating learning through adaptive management. We outline the application of these strategies to freshwater recreational fisheries management using a case study in Wisconsin, USA, where black bass (Micropterus spp.) populations are increasing, while Walleye ( Sander vitreus ) populations are decreasing. Managing for heterogeneity in functional groups (e.g., age classes and prey species of sport fishes), fishery objectives, and regulations can increase resilience, although heterogeneity must be balanced with replication to facilitate learning. Monitoring designed to evaluate management objectives and inform about critical uncertainties, when combined with heterogeneity, creates opportunities for adaptive management, another critical resilience strategy. Although barriers exist to implementing resilience strategies, management designed to accommodate uncertainty and illuminate its consequences is needed to maintain critical fisheries in a rapidly changing world.

Building a successful sales organization is more than possible if you have the right information, tools, and work ethic to make it work. In Managing to Sell, author Lou Sepulveda reveals the successful sales techniques that have worked in his own career. 'Managing to Sell' will teach you: the secrets to developing door-to-door sales teams how to hire, develop, train, and build a sales team that shatters corporate records About the Author Lou Sepulveda, CPP, grew a sales organization from a start-up to a $5 billion annual business in less than four years. Author of 'The Formula for Selling Alarm Systems' and 'Surviving in the Security Alarm Business,' Sepulveda is CEO of Lou Sepulveda Consulting, which specializes in assisting companies in developing and growing their sales organizations. Lou has been instrumental in developing and growing an independent dealer organization, judged by its volume to be the number one security alarm dealer program in the United States. He followed up that accomplishment by developing and then growing the largest international dealer organization outside the United States. Sepulveda has developed and managed direct sales organizations in the United States and in thirty countries around the world. Those offices quickly became the market leader in every country in which they operated, proving that language and cultural differences make little difference in creating success.

This book shows how school improvement efforts are often undermined by the changing conditions around schools, as well as by some of the very policies and programs designed to help them make improvements. Hatch argues that schools cannot wait around for conditions to improve or policymakers to figure out how to provide the right support. Schools need to create the conditions for their own success. To help them accomplish that, the A01thor describes a small set of key practices that schools can use to get resources, manage external demands, and build their capacity to make and sustain improvements over time.

This book is meant to help the many engineers who are thrust into an engineering management position with little or no training. The book will cover everything from “where to start” on your first day to the management process, which is a feedback process designed to manage the engineer. Finally, we will cover the “Art” of managing engineers, which will address many of the difficulties you will face in your job and end up with how to transform yourself from a great engineering manager to a leader and earn the respect of your team. The book is organized into seven chapters. It starts with a description of “what” really is an engineering manager. It addresses the roles and goals of the engineering manager and covers a few simple rules that are humorous but will serve you well. Next, the book goes into where to start. Many engineers are put into a management position after they have been with a team long enough or their boss has moved on. They have little or no training on what to do and will often mimic their boss’s behavior, which can be good or bad, depending on the boss that they had. Following this, the book goes into the Science of Engineering management. This is a process designed to manage the day to day activites of the engineer. Then, the book describes what I call the “Art” of the engineering manager. How to deal with the unique characteristics of many engineers as engineers in general can be very opinionated and difficult to manage. Finally, the book will address how to transform yourself from just managing the team, to becoming a leader and how to earn the respect of your team.

“Mantle and Lichty have assembled a guide that will help you hire, motivate, and mentor a software development team that functions at the highest level. Their rules of thumb and coaching advice are great blueprints for new and experienced software engineering managers alike.” —Tom Conrad, CTO, Pandora “I wish I’d had this material available years ago. I see lots and lots of ‘meat’ in here that I’ll use over and over again as I try to become a better manager. The writing style is right on, and I love the personal anecdotes.” —Steve Johnson, VP, Custom Solutions, DigitalFish All too often, software development is deemed unmanageable. The news is filled with stories of projects that have run catastrophically over schedule and budget. Although adding some formal discipline to the development process has improved the situation, it has by no means solved the problem. How can it be, with so much time and money spent to get software development under control, that it remains so unmanageable? In Managing the Unmanageable: Rules, Tools, and Insights for Managing Software People and Teams , Mickey W. Mantle and Ron Lichty answer that persistent question with a simple observation: You first must make programmers and software teams manageable. That is, you need to begin by understanding your people—how to hire them, motivate them, and lead them to develop and deliver great products. Drawing on their combined seventy years of software development and management experience, and highlighting the insights and wisdom of other successful managers, Mantle and Lichty provide the guidance you need to manage people and teams in order to deliver software successfully. Whether you are new to software management, or have already been working in that role, you will appreciate the real-world knowledge and practical tools packed into this guide.
